equipa esteja totalmente concentrada no jogo contra o Sporting. Ricardo
Liga e Paulo Fonseca quer evitar desconcentrações.
alegada indisciplina.
Holofotes a incidirem
jogar no Domingos Sávio.
treinar sob orientação do carismático César Nascimento.
receber 10 mil escudos (50 euros) mensais.
Sporting. Nesse ano sagrou-se campeão da Europa de sub-17.
Em
2001, ainda com 17 anos, integrou a tempo inteiro o plantel principal do
Oliveira.
No início
lesão grave no joelho direito.
Estava bem,
estava a treinar normalmente no clube dele. Peso?
A
adeptos, contudo, sempre estiveram do lado do jogador. Uma tarja com a
inscrição «Quaresma 7 We Love You» passeou pelos estádios da Liga local,
fosse qual fosse o momento do jogador. Algo habitual, de resto, pois no
«Do
As Cristiano Ronaldo readies himself for
another potentially career defining moment on the global football stage,
spare a thought for the man who was meant to join him in the upper
echelons of football’s tapestry. Emerging from the same prestigious
Sporting Lisbon academy, Ricardo Quaresma was once seen as Luis Figo’s
heir apparent. Instead he finds himself on what is likely to be one of
the final legs of his footballing journey in the middle east with Al
Ahli.
It’s a far cry from his beginnings in Portugal’s capital.
Promoted from Sporting’s B-team as a 17 year-old, much was expected of
him after a stellar first season in which he lead the club to a league
and cup double under the guidance of manager Laszlo Boloni. Arriving
right behind him was Ronaldo. As Carlos Quieroz once admitted, choosing
which dazzling winger to sign was a genuine dilemma, with one belief
unanimous; both would shine.
For a period, Quaresma did. His four years in Porto
brought two Portuguese player of the year awards, and a string of
highlights that vindicated the opinions formed during his days at
Sporting. An expert in the ‘Trivela’ technique, he often reveled in the
big stage the Champions League provided him. Yet just as there was a
peak, there were also notable troughs.
The summer that Ronaldo moved to Manchester United,
Quaresma was also sold to Barcelona. While the former ascended to
greatness under the tutelage of Sir Alex Ferguson, Quaresma had his
inconsistent performances and poor attitude called into question by
Frank Rjikaard. With his first team opportunities limited, the
disagreement crescendoed when he said he would never player for
Barcelona again under the tenure of Rjikaard, in what was seen as an
early example of his arrogance.
A career littered with contrasts, he enjoyed a far more fruitful relationship with Jesualdo Ferreira at Porto. “He’s a very particular player with unusual talents who is really enjoyable to watch,” Ferreira said of the man nicknamed ‘Harry Potter’.
“I’ve seen him become more of a team
player but I don’t want him to lose his personality and individuality
otherwise he’ll turn into an average player rather than playing like the
genius he is. To sum up he’s very special.”
More than just admiration, the experienced coach coddled his winger (arguably in the same way Ferguson did Ronaldo). Ferreira
noted that Quaresma was not defensively minded. Consequently he
absolved him from such duties, preferring to utilize his pace and tricks
on the counter attack to devastating affect. Jose Mourinho had no
desire to pamper a player he had invested over €18million in. Having
forced wingers like Arjen Robben and Damien Duff to work the entire
flank at Chelsea, Mourinho seemed unlikely to change tact, and he
didn’t.
Seeking balance from all his players, and noting the frailties of his
defensive game, Quaresma found the mentally taxing style of Serie A
difficult to adapt to. Marginalized to the role of impact sub, the once
joy inducing ‘Trivela’ was now being thrust upon every situation and
rarely providing the desired effect. Afforded a temporary stay at
Chelsea, even that was chaotic as Luiz Felipe Scolari (the organizer of
his loan) was sacked.
As Ronaldo collected the Ballon D’or in 2008, Quaresma was
awarded the Bidone D’oro (The Golden Trash Can), for being voted the
worst new arrival in Serie A. Just like at Barcelona, his playing time
was again restricted. In his second season he averaged 35 minutes a
match, the potential star now no more than a closing act despite being
only 27. Whether it was due to pity or frustration, Inter sold Quaresma
to Besiktas in 2010, taking an €11million hit in the process.
His time with the continent’s elite
seemed finished. Thriving with the ‘Kara Kartallar’ he notched eleven
goals in his first campaign. Yet like many a raging storm his was
preceded by calm. Substituted during the club’s Europa League tie
against Atlético Madrid,
his fiery temper denoted itself once more, with youth no longer an
applicable mitigation. Lambasting coach Carlos Carvalhal, even calling
him worthless, the club sided with their mercurial winger and Carvalhal
was dismissed.
In return, they hoped Quaresma would
agree to a lesser salary as they desperately tried to manage the club’s
wage bill. When he refused, president Fikret
Orman said he would not play for the club again. Serving as the tipping
point, his career in Turkey took a nosedive. Accused of urinating on the
club’s kit-man, and flashing a female member of staff, he vehemently
denied such claims and threatened to sue.
Rumored with a return home to Portugal, it was
mutually agreed before Christmas his deal would be paid up. More
diplomatic than in his younger days, he left graciously and quietly.
Less than a month later and his latest club, Al Ahli, was revealed with a
startling admission: “I don’t really know
anything about the club or the league,” Quaresma said, making it
difficult to look past financial gain as his motivation.
After a dismal debut that culminated in a booking for
insulting the referee, he scored his first goal for the club on Monday,
in a stadium with far fewer patrons than Ronaldo will play in front of
each week. Often perceived as a shy but jovial character, the beaming
smile that littered his Porto days is no longer prominent. At 29, he is
unlikely to ever return to the grandest stage, and just as his good
friend Ronaldo is proof of what success players can achieve, Quaresma is
a harsh reminder that football also has its failures.
Segundo o jornal turco Fanatik,
Al Ahli lift President's Cup after classic battle with Al Shabab
Al Shabab striker Edgar finished his first appearance in a President’s
Cup final with an unwanted hat-trick as his late own goal confirmed a
thrilling 4-3 win for 10-man Al Ahli.
The Brazilian had earlier scored a brace either side of half-time to
haul his side onto level terms after Ahli had raced into a 2-0 lead in
the first 15 minutes as Adnan Hussein Al Beloshi and Grafite scored.
Shabab keeper Salem Abdulla then saved a penalty from the Pro League’s
International Player of the Year but less than two minutes later was
wrong-footed by a Luis Jimenez free-kick from wide on the left.
A penalty from Ciel tied the scores again at 3-3 with less than 10
minutes to go but Edgar would apply the decisive touch at the wrong end
in the 85th minute as Ismail Al Hamad’s driven centre rebounded off him
and into an empty net.
The Red Knights were reduced to 10 men before the end though as
talisman Grafite was shown a second yellow card for a crude foul on
Hassan Ibrahim.
The result means Ahli have drawn level with Sharjah as the tournament’s
most successful club with eight titles. Defeat was tough on Shabab
though who had shown resilience and heart to fight back twice in the
game. Ricardo Quaresma may have made headlines when he arrived in Dubai at
the start of the year but he has not exactly dominated column inches
since and was a notable absentee from Ahli's squad ahead of kick-off.
Instead his place went to Al Beloshi who has proved a much more sound
investment since he too arrived in January, from Pro League rivals Bani
Yas.
And it was the UAE winger who gave the Red Knights the lead at the
Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium with a little over five minutes gone. Walid
Abbas failed to control a flick-on from Grafite on the edge of the box,
allowing the ball to run through to Al Beloshi who showed great
composure to beat Salem Abdulla in the Shabab goal.
Abbas was forced to make an excellent covering tackle to deny Grafite
minutes later but Ahli had started in dominant mood and the Brazilian
would double his side’s lead on the quarter-hour. This time Amir Mubarak
Ghanim was allowed to weave across the box before sliding a lovely ball
into the area that Grafite need only flick with the outside of his
right boot to wrong-foot Abdulla.
Abbas was hauled off by coach Marcos Paqueta shortly afterwards but
that wasn’t initially enough to turn the tide as Grafite spurned a
couple of presentable opportunities to make it 3-0.
The third goal did arrive 13 minutes before the break but it went to
the Hawks. Azizbek Haydarov had seen his drive turned behind by Majed
Hassan’s block, but from the resulting corner Edgar beat Yousif Mohamed
to power a header home.
The atmosphere inside the ground changed instantly as Shabab’s fans at
the other end suddenly found their voice. And spurred on it was their
team who finished the half stronger, with the goal-scorer and Esam Dhahi
failing to test Majed Naser when well placed.
Indeed Shabab were incensed as referee Fahad Al Qasar blew his whistle
for half-time as moments earlier he had brought a promising attack to a
halt with a second ball on the pitch.
An extended half-time break might have been expected to stall Shabab’s
progress but instead they drew level within four minutes of the restart.
Ciel’s quick free-kick caught Ahli right-back Abdulaziz Haikal fast
asleep and allowed Luiz Henrique the time and space to draw Naser out of
his goal and lay on a second goal for compatriot Edgar.
The banner unfurled at kick-off by Red Knights fans predicting an
eighth President’s Cup win was beginning to look a little foolhardy. Yet
following a breathless eight minutes they were back in front.
In that time Hawks keeper Abdulla was both hero and villain for his
side. Having initially made up for giving away a penalty for crashing
into Al Beloshi by saving Grafite’s penalty, moments later he misjudged
the flight of Jimenez’s floated free-kick, allowing it to drift over his
head and into the far top corner.
Remarkably a roller-coaster of a match took another turn as Abdulaziz
Haikal’s reckless challenge on Luiz Henrique gave Ciel the chance to
equalise from the spot. He took it gleefully.
But within four minutes Ahli had established a third and final lead. Al
Hamadi did brilliantly to hammer the ball across goal and Edgar had no
time to react or get out of the way.
Grafite was rightly ordered off the field before the end but despite a
late scare which saw Saood Surour head off the line, the Red Knights
held on in a game that will live long in the memories of those who were
here to see it.
TALKING POINTS
Dubai classic
The two Dubai-based clubs served up an enthralling game in the capital,
which was easily one of the greatest President’s Cup final of recent
times. Ahli came out of the blocks quickly and were well worth their 2-0
lead but as has been the case so many times this season Shabab refused
to lie down. The own goal was a cruel way for Edgar to sign off from an
impressive first season in the UAE.
Grafite sees red
The challenge that felled Ibrahim late on, while perhaps not malicious,
was bade enough to earn a red all on its own. His first booking had
come for a deliberate handball so while he may protested the Brazilian
can really have no complaints.
Slack defending
What MOTD’s Alan Hansen would have made of this final is anyone’s
guess. Both sides attacked with verve but defended with nerves. Each
looked susceptible to diagonal balls all evening and at least six of the
seven goals came from mistakes at the back.
MAN OF THE MATCH – Luis Jimenez (Ahli)
Going forward the Red Knights had a number of key performers, not least
Al Beloshi and Al Hamadi yet it was the Chilean who supplied the
final’s most composed performance. Having given his side a lead at 3-2
he was back in his own box to head away Shabab pressure.
Classificação Final do campeonato do EAU:
Etisalat Pro League leaders Al Ain held second-placed Al Ahli to a 0-0
draw at the Rashid Stadium in Dubai on Saturday evening. The rescheduled
Round 14 match result now gives Al Ain a points total of 50, whilst Al
Ahli are ten behind on 40. The result of this fixture, however, has been
suspended until confirmation of a decision from the Disciplinary
Committee following an incident late in the game involving one of the
match officials.
Al Ahli came streaming forward in the early
stages, racking up seven attacks in the opening 20 minutes, whilst Al
Ain failed to muster anything during the same period. In the 9th minute
Ismael Al Hammadi saw his on-target effort from the right-hand side
crucially cleared off the line by Al Ain’s defensive midfielder Matei
Mirel Radoi. Ahmad Khalil – operating more on the flanks than as an
out-and-out striker as Al Ahli coach Quique Flores accommodated all his
main attacking options into the starting lineup – hit a teasing cross
into the area in the 18th minute, but it was somehow missed by both the
head of Grafite and the gloves of Al Ain goalkeeper Mahmood Al Mas as it
flew through the area. Five minutes later Portuguese international
Ricardo Quaresma forced a fine save from Al Mas as he hit a beautiful
shot with the outside of his right boot.
The importance of the
contest to both sets of players was clear to see, as nobody was shy in
the tackle and every ball was fiercely contested. Al Ahli’s
offensive-minded lineup was pinning Al Ain firmly back in their own half
but the home side lacked the cutting edge required in the final third,
and the longer they went without scoring the more confidence Al Ain
gained that they could snatch a goal on the counter attack. In the 32nd
minute Mohammed Abdulrahman showed that Omar is not the only brother
with a repertoire of dazzling skills in his locker by demonstrating some
fancy footwork down the left, but unfortunately for Al Ain he strayed
into an offside position when receiving a give-and-go from Kembo-Ekoko.
Four minutes later Al Ahli’s Grafite was tripped just on the edge of the
area, giving them a set piece in a very dangerous position, but
Mohammad Khalil’s free kick did not make it past the wall and Al Ain
immediately broke forward in a rapid counter attack. Mohamed Ahmed
strode down the right wing and picked out Yousef Ahmed, but the
youngster put his shot straight at Al Ahli goalkeeper Majed Naser and
Jires Kembo-Ekoko’s follow-up rose just over the crossbar in what was Al
Ain’s best chance of the first half. Al Ahli continued to threaten
through Jiminez, Ahmed Khalil, Quaresma, Grafite and the industrious
Ismael Al Hammadi, but could not find a way through and somehow ended
the first half on level terms at 0-0.
Al Ain started the second
half more brightly as they tried to assert themselves on the contest,
winning a free kick in a dangerous position just four minutes after the
restart but Ismael Al Hammadi took the full force of Kembo-Ekoko’s free
kick in his face as he did his job in the wall. One minute later Yousef
Ahmed brilliantly controlled a pass from Helal Saeed before turning to
shoot on his left side, but the effort rose just over the crossbar. In
the 52nd minute Yousef Ahmed again skipped forward but his final ball
was neither a shot on target nor a cross, and soon the managers were
bringing on reinforcements to try and find the difference in the game.
Coach Cosmin of Al Ain made the first change, bringing Omar Abdulrahman
off the bench in place of Fawzi Fayez in the 54th minute, before Quique
Flores replaced Ahmed Khalil with Majed Hassan three minutes later. Al
Ain also introduced Australian striker Alex Brosque coming on for Yousef
Ahmed just after the hour mark. Al Ahli enjoyed far fewer attacks than
they had done in the first half, but a long-range effort from Amir
Mubarak Ghanim went close in the 63rd minute. With nothing to separate
the sides, managers threw on their final substitutions in the closing
ten minutes with Ricardo Quaresma being withdraw in the 81st minute for
Adnan Al Beloshi, and Mohammed Abdulrahman replaced by Ali Al Wehaibi
for the visitors. Four minutes from time Omar Abdulrahman tried his luck
from a very distant free kick, but his effort was always rising and did
not trouble Majed Naser in the Al Ahli goal. Ismael Al Hammadi kept
fighting right until the death with Adnan Al Beloshi doing his best to
make an impact in the penalty area, but Al Ahli could not convert their
possession advantage into that all-important goal and had to settle for a
point.
